Shocking

I used to be health conscious. But also a social person so I was a regular visitor to bars and pubs with friends. I gained weight. So I decided to switch to the keto diet. When on a keto protocol, carbs are off-limits. Social life is also challenging because carbs are everywhere.

But I was delighted to know that, unlike many other diets, alcohol isn’t completely forbidden while going keto. An occasional glass of champagne, red or white wine, or distilled liquor may be okay. But I was shocked that I was getting tipsy with just half a glass of wine. It was very unusual for me. I am shocked. I didn’t know if it was a side effect of the keto diet or something else.

Keto and alcohol tolerance:

Nowadays, almost everyone knows about the low-carb, moderate-protein, and high-fat diet plan called the ketogenic diet. The keto diet drastically reduces carbohydrate intake (up to 20-50 grams per day) and replaces them with fats. It’s a diet plan that puts your body into ketosis, a state in which your body burns fat for energy instead of carbohydrates. Many people follow this diet as it helps them reduce weight quickly. But the most significant drawback is that you get drunk very fast. Even a single drink per night can cause problems if you follow the keto diet plan.

Now let’s look at why this happens:

During ketosis, your body’s glycogen level drops, which means it can’t absorb alcohol and you become drunk faster. When you eat carbs, your glycogen stores are filled. We can say that many substances in your blood and body can absorb alcohol. Therefore, the rate at which you get drunk slows down compared to the keto diet.

But there is still a way to enjoy occasional drinking while on the keto diet.

Never drink on an empty stomach.

Eat low-carb vegetables and fruits.

Stay hydrated. Drink one glass of water after every drink.

Never have more than one drink per hour.
